Nest is reportedly working on a number of new products including an all-in-one security solution, a more affordable thermostat, a new indoor camera, and a new digital doorbell. The information comes from a new report from Bloomberg, which credits “a person familiar with the matter” for the information.
In terms of the new security system, it is reported that this will be a full end-to-end solution which is spearheaded by the main central hub which comes equipped with a keypad. Padding out the solution will be key fobs for activating and deactivating the system, as well as number of sensors which can be attached to doors and windows. This will also look to be a ‘smarter’ system and will come with app-support offering the ability for a homeowner to permit access to visitors directly from within the app. Moving to the new thermostat, and the clear suggestion is that this will be positioned as a more affordable option. Namely, the new thermostat will be priced at less than $200. Which, while not significantly cheaper than the current crop of Nest thermostats, may just be cheaper enough to entice new buyers. To account for the lesser price point, the information coming through is that the new version will come with a lesser build quality. More accurately, “less expensive components.” Although in spite of the reduced price and suggested less expensive build aspects, the thermostat will work in much the same way as Nest’s current offerings, including intelligently adapting temperature based on previous usage. With one of the clear suggestions being that the new model will be able to offer individual room temperature monitoring and changing, not just the home as a whole. Closing out the list of new suggested products is a newer version of Nest’s indoor security camera as well as a new digital doorbell. Improvements that are being suggested with the new camera include the ability to identify specific people in shot. Although, it is expected that other improvements will be on offer as well. While the new doorbell will be equipped with a video camera and will also include app-support, allowing for the homeowner to view the person at the door when away from home.
At present, the details on when these new products are expected to hit the market are a little vague, although the report does detail that the new security system and the indoor camera could be the first to arrive. With the camera launch expected as early as this fall and the security system to begin shipping by the end of the year. While the digital doorbell and thermostat are said to likely arrive “by next year” and “as soon as next year,” respectively.
