Verizon is now pushing out its Android Nougat update to the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. According to the support pages provided by Verizon, it will be rolling out today with the new software version NRD90M.G930VVRU4BQA2 for the Galaxy S7 and NRD90M.G935VVRU4BQA2 for the Galaxy S7 Edge. You can expect it to be a very large update, so a charged battery and Wi-Fi connection is recommended. While getting Android 7.0 is in itself, great enough, on the Samsung models, it also includes the latest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz – which briefly debuted on the Galaxy Note 7 before its demise. It is still TouchWiz, but it is a lighter and gentler rendition.
Android 7.0 is a significant upgrade, both behind the screens and in terms of adding real functionality to devices. Although some of the upgrades are not ones which the end user might visually see, they are there to improve the overall Android experience. For example, Just-in-Time (JIT) increases the performance of apps, reduces the amount of RAM needed to run them, and makes them run better on low-RAM devices. For those into graphics, the Vulkan API helps intensify the graphics and provides better reflections, less motion blur, and life-like water effects. The Project Svelte feature optimizes the way apps run in the background and will save you both battery life and precious internal memory. Doze is significantly improved and will now kick in almost immediately after your device goes to sleep, thus saving, even more, battery life. Data Saver allows you to turn on a feature that will only allow your device to update apps when connected to WiFi – saving your data usage for more productive endeavors. Not forgetting the new Split-Screen view that lets you run two apps simultaneously and see them both on your display.
As in all upgrades, this will roll out to devices over the next few days. If you haven’t received yours yet, you can always ‘force’ it by going into your settings, and check under System updates. This action will generally prompt you to download the upgrade and give you the option to install it now or later. You will be without your device during the process, but it is well worth the wait.
