T-Mobile started pushing out a software update to some early units of the LG G6 (LG-H872) on its network, one user confirmed on Twitter. The latest software package for LG’s new Android flagship bears the software version “H87210e” and is just over 124MB in size, though it’s currently unclear what kind of changes it’s bringing. The official changelog accompanying the package only mentions “various updates” and T-Mobile’s official support pages for the LG G6 don’t reveal any additional info regarding the new software, so there’s still no way to tell what exactly is the third largest wireless carrier in the country currently distributing.
The LG G6 is slated to officially launch on Friday, April 7, running Android 7.0 Nougat and March Security Update out of the box. According to one early owner of the handset, the update that T-Mobile is now pushing out isn’t packed with a new security patch and doesn’t upgrade the Android version running on the device, so coupled with its relatively modest size, it’s reasonable to presume the package only contains minor software tweaks and performance improvements. In any case, the new software version started rolling out a few days ago and is being distributed as an over-the-air (OTA) update, meaning it may still not be available to all active devices on T-Mobile’s network. If you were so lucky that you already managed to get your hands on the device and still haven’t received the notification prompting you to download the latest update, you can trigger a manual search by opening your LG G6 Settings app, navigating to “About phone,” selecting “Update Center,” and opting for the “System updates” option on the next menu. From there, simply tap the large “Check For Update” command and wait for the device to search for an incoming OTA package.
Officially announced at the latest iteration of Mobile World Congress (MWC), the LG G6 is LG’s latest high-end Android smartphone and a successor to the modular LG G5. The device has already been on sale in South Korea for a while now and has reportedly been doing rather well, so it remains to be seen whether the LG G6 also manages to emulate that success stateside.
