Samsung has announced that the smartphone manufacturer will release a software patch that will fix certain issues plaguing the South Korean models of its flagship smartphones Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. According to Samsung’s announcement, the software patch aims to fix red-tinted AMOLED screens and Wi-Fi connectivity issues affecting selected units of Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. Samsung noted that these issues are not product defects but the patches will be released to allow the users to adjust the settings of their smartphones to their preference.
The first issue Samsung aims to fix with the software patch is the red-tinted displays in some units of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. Reports and images have surfaced in the internet and social media showing different displays with different tints, with some units having a very visible reddish tint. In order to resolve this issue, Samsung aims to reduce the reddish tint by providing additional controls to adjust the display colors to the user’s preference. If the reddish tint in the displays are not resolved by either adjusting the color balance sliders which are already in the display settings or by the software update, owners of Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus may ask for a free replacement of the units, though this offer is currently limited to South Korea.
Another issue of the Samsung Galaxy S8 that smartphone manufacturer aims to fix is the Wi-Fi connectivity problems of the smartphone. This is another issue that is limited to South Korea since the problem is only observed when the smartphones are connected to the 5GHz Wi-Fi network of the South Korean telecom KT. Upon investigation by Samsung and KT, they noted that the cause of the connectivity problems is the conflict between the advanced power saving feature of Samsung Galaxy S8 and the access points made by Dongwon T&I, which KT uses for its Wi-Fi network, resulting in the access point recognizing the Samsung flagship as an abnormal terminal. Upon the installation of the software update, users of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus should expect improved Wi-Fi connectivity to KT’s Wi-Fi network.
