Sprint has changed the terms of their global roaming plan to offer better value to customers when traveling in 165 international destinations. Those customers who have the Sprint Unlimited Freedom plan will automatically receive free texts, free basic data, and voice calls priced at $0.20 cents per minute. If they are traveling in Mexico or Canada, customers can receive free LTE high-speed data, voice calls, and texts. Upon arrival at their destination, customers will receive a text message clearly laying out Sprint’s services and rates, meaning that they can use their smartphones just as they do at home, without the worry of racking up an unexpected bill. Customers will also be able to take advantage of free international calls from the US to Canada and Mexico, and high-speed data can be purchased where available, directly from the customer’s device. This costs between $2-$5 per day in Canada and Mexico, but there’s also a weekly option costing between $10-$25, with the price depending on the destination. The speeds offered in the global roaming plan is “up to 2G,” meaning that browsing will be extremely slow.
Sprint’s Chief Marketing Officer, Roger Sole, said in a statement that “Sprint customers automatically have access to great international services when traveling abroad.” The new features of the global roaming plan are intended to reinforce Sprint’s dedication to their “customer-centric” campaign. Their new ad campaign, which is called “Works for Me,” launched recently and aims to highlight Sprint’s transparency and ease of use for their customers, giving them mobile plans that fit their day-to-day needs.
Customers who are on other plans with Sprint will have to pay extra for calls, texts, and data when they are abroad. However, it’s thought that the prices will be much cheaper than before, and much less than what other rival mobile providers are charging. Sprint have confirmed that the changes will take place automatically, and they have also said that global roaming is only available to customers who have devices with LTE/GSM capabilities. In recent weeks, many mobile giants including Vodafone have scrapped their roaming charges for using mobile devices abroad, and roaming charges for travelers to the EU will be abolished altogether from June this year.
