Verizon’s version of the LG G6 comes with Android Nougat out of the box and Android O isn’t ready yet, so it’s only natural that the phone’s first update would be the April security patch, which is the case as Verizon has just recently sent out the update. As a bonus, the phone’s UI has received some tweaks in regards to warning users about water protection, particularly in regards to what needs to be done with the SIM card slot to ensure maximum water protection, and the phone’s ability to detect moisture in the charging port, and what users should do if moisture is detected. The new instructions, shown below, are just a bit more detailed, and have been changed to avoid the use of the word “waterproof”.
The April security patch for Android contains a large number of critical fixes, and the changes to the language of the water warnings make the UI a bit easier to understand for those who don’t have extensive background knowledge of the LG G6. The update should be live over the air for all LG G6 owners on Verizon right now, and successfully applying the update will change your build number to VS98811A. There are no changes to the baseband or kernel, and no under the hood tweaks this time around; if the update goes well, everything about the phone should function as before, except it will be safe from all of the hacks and exploits that Google discovered throughout March, and the water-related warnings will be changed as shown below.
Just because it’s a minor update does not make it any less important to install, nor any less important to install safely. Always make sure that your device is either on a charger or has at least 80% remaining on a reliable battery. In the particular case of the LG G6, you’ll probably want to ensure that it’s free of any moisture per the changed warnings. To initiate the update, simply go to Settings, then About Device, and find the update from there. If you don’t see it, a reboot should do the trick. It’s worth noting that Verizon is by no means the first in the US to update their LG G6 units.
