Verizon Wireless started pushing out the April Android Security Update to all models of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge on its network, the largest mobile service provider in the United States announced on Thursday. The update for the Galaxy S7 ships with the firmware version G930VVRU4BQA4, while Verizon’s customers using the Galaxy S7 Edge will receive the build G935VVRU4BQA4, the New Jersey-based company revealed. The new software update sports fixes for dozens of vulnerabilities of the Android operating system, in addition to remedying a number of security-related issues that are specific to the proprietary software running on Verizon’s variants of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge. Outside of making the devices more secure, the new update doesn’t boast any kind of end-user features as its changelog doesn’t even mention any bug fixes or performance improvements that users tend to expect from minor software updates. Regardless, consumers are encouraged to install the new software as soon as possible in order to make sure their Android devices are as safe as they can be.
The new software package for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge is being rolled out in stages as an over-the-air (OTA) update, meaning all users who are eligible to receive the latest Android security patch may have to wait a few days until the software is available on their device. Both members of Samsung’s 2016 flagship lineup periodically scan for updates on their own and will serve users with a push notification prompting them to install the April Android Security Update as soon as one is available, though anyone is always free to try searching for the patch manually by launching the Settings app on their device, accessing the “About phone” section, and tapping the “Download software updates” option.
The new patch for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge that Verizon is now pushing out won’t update the actual version of Android running on the handsets, both of which are still powered by Android 7.0 Nougat. An update on upcoming software for Samsung’s 2016 smartphones is expected to follow later this year.
