AccuWeather App Now Compatible With Android TV

AccuWeather has today announced that its Android app has gained compatibility with Android TV devices. The general premise of AccuWeather will likely need little introduction, as the Android app is a popular option among Android device owners and today’s announcement sees the app not only gaining Android TV support, but that version also adopting a much more Android TV-focused design. Much in the same way as the app was recently updated to better support Android Wear devices with the introduction of Android Wear 2.0.

As a result, Android TV device owners are now able to make use of AccuWeather’s MinuteCast technology which looks to offer ‘minute-by-minute forecasts’ for up to a period of two hours at a time. Of course, the app does offer more traditional forecasts as well, including hour-by-hour, day-by-day, and over longer periods of time, such as on a weekly basis. The forecasts are in addition to the more real-world weather details that are on offer, such as RealFeel technology which looks to provide a greater insight into what the weather actually feels like, compared to what the weather numerically is. With this being a TV-oriented version of the app, there is also plenty of weather-related videos on offer as well. So this is more than just a standard weather app, with plenty of additional and TV-focused content for Android TV users to digest. According to AccuWeather’s President of Digital Media, Steven Smith, “the new AccuWeather app for Android TV provides viewers with the most accurate, personalized weather experience available in the world.”

The app is now available to download from the Google Play Store on desktop, as well as directly from compatible Android TV devices. It is not quite clear whether the Google Play Store listing has been updated yet as the last update is listed as May 12, although if installed on an Android TV device, the app seems to work as suggested. This is a free version of the app and AccuWeather does also offer a premium version for those who want an even more feature-rich service. The cost of the AccuWeather Platinum version is $2.99, although that does not seem to have become available to Android TV device owners as of yet. We did reach out to see if the premium version would be coming and will provide more details as and when they become available.
