The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 Active was listed on Netflix’s support pages as being compatible with the company’s HD streaming service, with the Los Gatos, California-based company essentially confirming earlier reports that AT&T and Samsung are working on a special variant of the latter’s 2017 flagship. The device in question was recently listed by Netflix as the SM-G892A, which is the same model number that was revealed by an industry insider in mid-March when the original report about the Galaxy S8 Active being in the works surfaced online.
The upcoming Android flagship is expected to improve upon the waterproof rating of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus, both of which already boast IP68 certification. Last year’s Galaxy S7 Active introduced a design that adhered to the MIL-STD-810G U.S. military standard, guaranteeing above-average durability, and its successor will probably follow suit. According to previous reports, the Galaxy S8 Active is codenamed “Cruiser” and will be specifically designed for use in wet in and humid conditions. Some industry watchers previously speculated that the handset might ship with a larger battery than the 3,000mAh one featured in the regular Galaxy S8, though no concrete evidence of that theory has yet been revealed. No other details about the device have been revealed by industry insiders so far, though it seems that the handset is still months away from being released seeing how it has yet to be certified by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Likewise, it’s currently unclear whether the Galaxy S8 Active will ship with a physical Active button that was featured on its predecessor seeing how the base model of the device already boasts one extra physical button that’s dedicated to the Bixby artificial intelligence (AI) assistant. Regardless, seeing how the second largest mobile service provider in the country has yet to officially announce the Galaxy S8 Active that will presumably be available for pre-orders once it’s unveiled, the device likely won’t launch in the immediate future. Finally, AT&T and Samsung are only expected to revise the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 while an Active variant of the Galaxy S8 Plus is allegedly off the cards.
