Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer OPPO announced the OPPO A77, its latest Android-powered smartphone that was designed with a specific focus on recording images and video content. Just like its name suggests, the OPPO A77 is meant to be a direct successor to the OPPO A57 that was released in select markets in late 2016. From a purely visual standpoint, the new OPPO-made handset is virtually identical to its predecessor, boasting a traditional brick design with rounded edges and relatively large bezels, as well as a physical Home button with an integrated fingerprint scanner and a single-lens camera setup located in the top-left corner of its rear panel. The main aesthetical difference between the two is the screen size and quality of the devices seeing how the OPPO A77 boasts a 5.5-inch Full HD display panel whereas the OPPO A57 shipped with a 5.2-inch HD screen.
While the Dongguan, China-based tech giant didn’t introduce a major visual refresh of its mid-range Android lineup, the internals of the OPPO A77 are a significant upgrade over those powering the handset that preceded it. The newly announced device is powered by the MediaTek MT6750T system-on-chip (SoC) and 4GB of RAM, in addition to sporting 64GB of internal storage space that’s expandable by up to 256GB via a microSD card slot that also doubles as a second SIM slot. The device sports a 16-megapixel front-facing camera with an aperture of f/2.0 and support for Beauty 4.0 image-enhancing software solution, and this camera unit should prove to be a major upgrade over the 13-megapixel one integrated into the OPPO A57. The rear sensor of the device seemingly wasn’t changed as the Chinese original equipment manufacturer (OEM) says that the phone still ships with a 13-megapixel module that’s equipped with a dual LED flash and supports phase detection autofocus (PDAF). Finally, all of the aforementioned hardware is powered by a 3,200mAh battery, while the device itself still ships with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, enhanced with OPPO’s proprietary Color OS 3.0 software suite.
Pre-orders for the OPPO A77 will open in Taiwan tomorrow and the smartphone is scheduled to be released on May 26. OPPO still hasn’t disclosed whether its latest Android handset will ever be released in more territories and it’s still unclear how much it could cost in other markets, though Taiwanese consumers will be able to purchase it for $10,090 NTD, which translates to approximately $333.
