Samsung is currently sending out the April 2017 security patch for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge in India. Indian owners of the SM-G930FD (Galaxy S7) and the SM-G943FD (Galaxy S7 Edge) models are invited to check their phones to see if the patch is already available for download, which it should be in the coming days.
On top of numerous security improvements, the patch also bundles a host of stability and performance optimizations, as well as customary bug fixes. The builds weight 169.79MB and 176.49MB, respectively, so these aren’t major updates, though users are still encouraged to connect to a stable Wi-Fi connection and make sure they have a somewhat charged battery before attempting to download and install the new patch. Since the software package is rolling out as an OTA (over-the-air) update, it might take some time before the new build hits every single unit in the country. In case you still don’t see an update notification on your phone, you can go ahead and check manually if the update has arrived by going to Settings>About Phone>Software update. While Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge users in India had to wait for the April 2017 security patch longer than most other owners of these devices, some of Samsung’s other customers in the country were luckier, as Samsung already produced the same update for the Galaxy C7 Pro and the Galaxy J7 (2016) last month.
Samsung’s previous-generation flagships received the Android 7.0 Nougat update only three months ago in India. The update finally bestowed highly anticipated Nougat-specific improvements including an overhauled UI design, new notifications and quick settings, improved multi-window mode support, and a more versatile Always On Display. Last month, Samsung noted that pre-orders for the newly launched Galaxy S8 had exceeded those of its predecessor, both in the United States and Korea, but both the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge are still being used by millions of people all over the world. Both devices are expected to receive at least one more major build of Android — specifically, Android O — and will continue to be updated with security patches at least until mid-2017.
