No OnePlus 2 Android Nougat Update, According To Customer Email

It seems the OnePlus 2 is not going to receive its long-awaited update to Android 7.0 (Nougat). This is coming from an owner who posted the confirmation online, along with what is said to be a copy of the transcript of a conversation with a OnePlus customer support representative. As part of that conversation, the OnePlus representative seemingly outright confirms the OnePlus 2 is not going to get its update to Android Nougat. With the transcript explicitly stating “as much as we would like to give the latest update on the OnePlus 2, we’ve discontinued updates for dated devices.”

If correct, this is notable for two reasons. Firstly, the OnePlus 2 is a device that is still under the two-year marker. So it would be expected that it would receive an update to Android Nougat, even if that was the device’s last update. The OnePlus 2 launched initially with Android 5.1 (Lollipop) and did see its update to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) arrive around the time the OnePlus 3 launched. So it would make sense for it to get its second major update (to Nougat) around now – around the time when the OnePlus 5 is expected to launch. Especially considering that Android 7.1.1 was spotted being tested on the OnePlus 2 as recently as the end of March, 2017.

The second notable reason is that it was only today that Pete Lau of OnePlus confirmed that both the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T would receive their updates to Android O. Both of these devices were originally released running on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), and have since seen their respective updates to Android Nougat. Why this is notable, is that in spite of the confirmation having come through that both the OnePlus 3 and 3T will be updated to Android O, back in June of 2016, OnePlus confirmed during a ‘Q&A with Helen’ that “OP2 will get the N update.” Now of course, that no longer seems to be the case. While it does seem probably unlikely that the same issue will occur for the OnePlus 3 and/or 3T, if the transcript comment “we’ve discontinued updates for dated devices” is actual OnePlus policy, then both the OnePlus 3 and 3T will also be dated devices by then. In fact, the OnePlus 3 is essentially already a discontinued device, and by the looks of it, the OnePlus 3T is currently in a state of discontinuation.
