The Moto Z2 Play has already leaked out a couple of times, but very little has been known about its specs, until now. According to a report out of VentureBeat, the Moto Z2 Play is going to be a bit thinner than its predecessor, but by being thinner, it’ll also have a significantly smaller battery pack inside. The Moto Z Play measured in at 7-millimeters and weighed in at a somewhat hefty 165 grams, the Moto Z2 Play is said to be around 6-millimeters and about 20 grams less, weighing in at about 145 grams. That’s still thicker than last year’s Moto Z which clocked in at about 5.19-millimeters thick. Now with this being a thinner and lighter device, it also comes with a smaller battery pack. Dropping from a 3510mAh battery in the Moto Z Play to a 3000mAh battery in the Moto Z2 Play.
As far as other specs for the Moto Z2 Play go, there will be a 5.5-inch 1080p display, the same as last year’s model. Powering the Moto Z2 Play is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 processor, a slight improvement over last year’s Snapdragon 625. Additionally, RAM and storage gets an upgrade to 4GB and 64GB respectively. Camera-wise, there is the same 5-megapixel front-facing camera, but the rear-facing camera gets a new 12-megapixel shooter with a f/1.7 aperture. Finally, the Moto Z2 Play will be available in Lunar Gray and Fine Gold, similar to the Moto G5 Plus from earlier this year.
VentureBeat also notes that the Moto Z2 Play is the first of three smartphones coming in the updated Moto Z2 lineup this year. And the first of the three series the company plans to release in 2017. The others include the Moto C and Moto C Plus, the Moto E4 and Moto E4 Plus. Of course, the other Moto Z2 smartphones are the Moto Z2 and Moto Z2 Force. This report does not mention when Motorola will be announcing these new smartphones, but given the amount of leaks coming out recently, it should be fairly soon. Additionally, Lenovo usually holds their Tech World event in June, which is where the Moto Z debuted last year, so it wouldn’t be too crazy to expect the Moto Z2 Play and others to make their debut at the same event this year.
