The Moto Z and Moto Z Force Droid Edition are now receiving the latest Android security patch dated May 1, 2017. As these are the Droid Edition models, the update is being pushed exclusively to the two devices on Verizon’s network. The wireless carrier has yet to publish the full changelog for the update but will likely reveal more about the contents of the software package once its rollout is complete. The security patch is being delivered to devices as an Over-The-Air (OTA) update, so it may take a few days before all eligible devices receive the latest software build. Following the installation of the software package, the software version of the devices should be upgraded to NCL25.86-11.4.
Verizon recommends users to install the May security patch while being connected to a Wi-Fi network to avoid using their mobile data. Also, it is best to have at least 50 percent of battery left while installing the update or charge your device during the installation process in order to avoid any potential complications. If the update is ready for your device, you will receive a notification prompting you to download and install the security patch. However, if you don’t like the idea of waiting for the notification to arrive, you may manually check for the update. In order to do so, simply head to the Settings app and tap the About phone option. From there, select System updates, and the system will prompt you to download the security patch if it is indeed ready for your device. The update is only rolling out for the Droid Editions of the Moto Z and Moto Z Force and not the unlocked units.
The Moto Z Droid Edition and Moto Z Force Droid Edition are relatively similar devices and both pack identical specs to their unlocked counterparts. Both devices are made out of metal and basically look the same, though the Moto Z Force Droid Edition is somewhat thicker due to its larger battery. The two smartphones sport 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED displays and are powered by the Snapdragon 820 quad-core System-on-Chip. Under the hood, both devices pack 4GB of RAM and come in two storage variants with 32GB and 64GB of flash memory. While both handsets sport identical 5-megapixel cameras on their front, the Moto Z Force Droid Edition boasts a 21-megapixel rear shooter while the Moto Z Droid Edition features a 13-megapixel main sensor. The Moto Z Force Droid Edition packs a 3,500mAh battery, while the Moto Z is powered by a 2,600mAh battery.
