ASUS‘ ZenScreen is a second-screen device with USB Type-C that it unveiled at Computex this week, and it serves the purpose of providing users with a second display that’s perfect for viewing additional web pages, documents, or other media that you might find useful to have in plain sight without having to tab out of whatever else it is you’re already doing on your laptop or desktop. Note that this isn’t a tablet and serves only to be a second-screen, so for those who are looking to pick something up that will handle all of the mobile computing needs, ASUS has other products for such a purpose.
The ZenScreen is 15.6-inches in size and it has a Full HD resolution, and ASUS is using an IPS panel for the display. It’s extremely lightweight and comes in at only 1.7 pounds, so it will fit perfectly into bags and briefcases or other luggage where you could easily store a laptop. Its weight and thin form factor though are just two of its beneficial features. One of the most puzzling yet also functional features is the inclusion of a pen that ASUS packs in the box. You might think this pen could be used for writing on the display and interacting with touch sensitivity, but you’d be wrong. The ZenScreen isn’t touch sensitive. The pen is actually only used as a prop-up tool for the screen to essentially act as a kickstand, and ASUS even designed a little hole in the bottom right corner that is meant just for this purpose. It can also be stood up in either landscape or portrait orientations with the pen, and on top of this the screen also comes with a smart cover that has multiple kickstand configurations of its own that will allow for various angles, so users can choose the best tool for the job.
The connection for the device is USB Type-C and will support both USB Type-C to USB Type-C and USB Type-C to USB A, so it’ll work with laptops that have either port. The downside is that it isn’t mentioned whether or not this is compatible with Chrome OS or even Android, so you may only be able to use the screen with Windows-based laptops and such. If that happens to fit your needs though, it’s already available on Amazon for pre-order at $249 USD.
