New OnePlus 5 Nighttime Shot Hints At 16MP Sensor(s)

OnePlus Chief Executive Officer Pete Lau on Wednesday took to Weibo to share a new nighttime photo taken with the OnePlus 5, the company’s upcoming Android flagship that’s scheduled to be launched later this month. The original photo is almost 3.5MB in size and sports a resolution of 4,608 by 3,456 pixels, indicating that the OnePlus 5 will sport at least one 16-megapixel sensor on its rear panel. The Shenzhen, Guangdong-based original equipment manufacturer (OEM) already accidentally confirmed that its next premium handset will sport a dual camera setup and depending on the exact specifics of that system, the OnePlus 5 will either feature one or two 16-megapixel sensors. If the company opted to equip the device with one monochrome and one RGB sensor like many OEMs adopting dual camera setups do, both are likely to boast the same resolution. An alternative solution would be to ship a smartphone with a regular lens and a wide-angle one with a lower resolution, which is what LG Electronics did with the LG G5 that boasted a dual camera setup consisting of a 16-megapixel sensor and an 8-megapixel one, allowing the device to more easily focus on objects placed at varying distances from the camera.

The OPPO-owned phone maker previously confirmed that French imaging company DxO Labs participated in the development of the OnePlus 5, indicating that the smartphone will feature advanced imaging software that’s meant to ensure improved camera capabilities compared to those of its predecessor, the 2016 OnePlus 3T. The newly unveiled nighttime shot taken with the device is seemingly rather clean and sharp, especially for an image taken with a mobile camera. The photo that can be seen above features no visible noise and seemingly doesn’t suffer from a massive loss of details in the shadows, though it remains to be seen how the OnePlus 5 will perform in everyday use and whether every photo taken with it in low-light conditions will be comparable to the one shared by Lau.

The Chinese company confirmed that the OnePlus 5 will be launched on June 20, with the device being expected to hit the market shortly after. More details on the availability and pricing of the upcoming handset should follow shortly.
