Google had released two Developer Previews for the upcoming Android O, and a new report just surfaced, claiming that the first official Android O update will land on Pixel devices in August. If this report is accurate, Google will release a final, new build of Android sooner than expected, considering they usually do it in fall. This info comes from David Ruddock, and he claims that the update will land in the first or second week of August.
Now, the source also mentions that this will be an OTA (over-the-air) update for Pixel phone, and that all compatible Pixel phones are also going to get the update at the same time. Now, do keep in mind that it’s quite possible, and even probable, that the new Pixel phones will not arrive until October probably, we’re talking about an Android O update for existing Pixel and Nexus smartphones. Having said that, the latest Android O Developer Preview arrived during this year’s Google I/O which was hosted by the company last month. Android O is not a complete overhaul of Google’s OS, not even close to it, but it’s definitely an evolution of the OS. Google is planning to add a ton of new features to Android via this update, including the picture-in-picture option, more options for the notification shade, much better task managing in the background which will keep rogue apps at bay and stop them from draining your battery, and so on.
It’s worth noting that Google is expected to release a couple more Developer Previews before the final version of Android O finally lands, and we’ll probably get to see some additional features added, so we don’t have all the necessary info at the moment, but Google already talked about the most important additions to its operating system. Now, as far as upcoming Pixel phones are concerned, we did see several rumors in the last couple of weeks, but nothing too specific, so we can only guess what to expect. It is possible that Google, once again, plans to release two Pixel phones, and that both of them will be fueled by the Snapdragon 835 64-bit octa-core SoC, and sport pretty much identical specs, aside from shipping with a different display and battery size, due to the sheer difference in the general size of the two devices.
