It seems the new Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL do not actually support the maximum limit on offer with 27-watt chargers. This follows on from the news yesterday that Googler Benson Leung took to Google+ to suggest as much. Something which would have added to the value on offer with Google’s latest Pixel phones as the previous models only supported 18-watt chargers.
Which is where the confusion now lies. As Leung has since updated the original Google+ post to provide some clarity on the topic although that clarity is not crystal clear. In the update Leung explains that these devices may well be able to negotiate higher watts from up to 27-watt chargers, although other aspects may place a limitation on the charge speed and rate the Pixels draw. So the suggestion here seems to be that although the two phones may be capable of drawing as much as 27-watts from a compatible charger, that is unlikely to be the case in terms of real-world usage. Whether Leung is referring to other safety measures that might be in place to limit the draw remains to be seen, but the general suggestion being made is that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will be limited to 18-watts once again.
Which is the exact limit of the charger that is included in the box. A point Leung also highlights in the updated post by noting that the included charger “will provide optimal charging for Pixel 2 and 2 XL.” Again, this use of language does seem to suggest that although the two Pixel 2 phones are capable of drawing a greater charge, they are designed to work more smoothly (and safely) with an 18-watt charging limit. Presumably, the takeaway from all of this is that in spite of them not being able to draw up to 27-watts from a third-party charger, they will work safely with chargers that offer an upper limit of 27-watts – for those who plan on buying a third-party charger instead of using the one in the box. Although again, those chargers will likely only deliver 18-watts to the devices irrespective of their ceiling limit.
