The LG V30 is one of the latest smartphones to become available and as part of the release process the LG V30 will have to go through the usual rites of passage including a durability test by the YouTuber, JerryRigEverything. Which is exactly what has happened this week. However, unlike previous durability tests by JerryRigEverything, this one is a rather uneventful affair due to the LG V30 performing well under duress. Which should be good news for those who have purchased the latest smartphone from LG, or those who plan to.
As is always the case with these tests, the LG V30 is put through three specific testing phases, a scratch test, followed by a burn test and concluding with the infamous bend test. On the scratching front, the LG V30 is listed as protected by Gorilla Glass 5 which is understood to be resistant to scratches up to a level 6 on the Mohs scale. Which is exactly what JerryRigEverything finds with the V30 not encountering any scratches until level 6/7. What is equally as important though is how JerryRigEverything notes that the rest of the phone is largely made up of metal. While this is probably to be expected with a premium device like the V30, it is worth keeping in mind that quite a debate raged when the LG G5 was first released due to what was seemingly a plastic coating over what was supposed to be a metal body. That revelation came to light thanks to the same YouTuber and forced LG to clarify the situation by stating the plastic was just a primer. In either case, no such instances are here with the LG V30 shown as metal throughout. In fact when it comes to the scratch test the only notable aspect is the fingerprint scanner as this seemed to fare far worse than other aspects, and once scratch was shown to lose all functionality.
Moving past the scratch test, and the burn test highlighted after 10 seconds the screen starts to show damage to the pixels. As this is an OLED display, and as JerryRigEverything points out, the damage at this point is largely irreversible. Although like the fingerprint sensor, the likelihood of the display enduring direct contact with an open flame for as long as 10 seconds, is unlikely to be something LG V30 owners will have to be concerned with. Last but not least, is the bend test, although like the other tests, there are no nasty surprises here with the V30 passing the bend test with flying colors. While JerryRigEverything does note there is some flex to the phone, it is not anything that was considered remotely problematic with the YouTuber noting how the LG V30 is a “solid, premium feeling phone.”
