While the Pixel 2, Pixelbook and Google Home Mini may have been the stars of Google’s hardware show today, the company also debuted a new pair of wireless headphones in the Pixel Buds. These were announced today since the Pixel 2 doesn’t have a headphone jack, like most other smartphones these days. The Pixel Buds are not truly wireless like the Apple Air Pods or Jaybird RUN, but these are wireless, but also have a rather interesting feature inside. And as expected, Google Assistant will help you pair them to your smartphone.
To pair your Pixel Buds with a smartphone, all you need to do is open the case. From there the Pixel Buds will begin communicating with your smartphone (ideally, any smartphone running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or later that has Google Assistant) and ask you to connect the two. Which means, it’s as easy as hitting the “Connect” button on your smartphone. Which is really the easiest way to get pairing. There’s really no other way to make this even easier. And it works identically to the Apple Air Pods, where you open the case and then they are paired with your iPhone. So Google is using Assistant here to get things done, but it also takes advantage of the Nearby feature it has been using over the past few years to do things like pairing an Android Wear smartwatch with your smartphone, or setting up a Chromecast device.
The Pixel Buds are a bit more than just a pair of wireless headphones from Google though. These also are instant translators. If you are traveling somewhere and encounter someone that doesn’t speak your language, the Pixel Buds are able to translate what they are saying to you, and then whatever you say back is also translated. It supports up to 40 languages that can be translated, which is a pretty cool feature, and it shows just how far ahead Google is in translation compared to other tech giants like Microsoft. The Pixel Buds will be available later this month and are going to cost $159, which is actually a fairly decent price for a pair of wireless earbuds.
