Rumor: Google Home Max Codenamed After The Notorious B.I.G.

The rumored Google Home Max speaker is codenamed “biggie” which is meant to be a reference to Christopher George Latore Wallace, a late rapper better known as The Notorious B.I.G., Biggie Smalls, or simply Biggie, 9to5Google reported on Tuesday, citing a source familiar with the company’s project. The device that’s meant to be a larger version of the Google Home smart speaker only became a subject of some rumors last month and it’s presently unclear whether it’s meant to be launched during Google’s upcoming hardware event scheduled for tomorrow, October 4th. Its smaller counterpart called the Google Home Mini will supposedly make an appearance at the same event, with sources previously claiming that the repeatedly leaked speaker is codenamed “joplin” as a direct reference to Janis Joplin.

It remains to be seen whether the Google Home Max is a device that Google greenlit for commercialization seeing how its sole existence doesn’t guarantee that, though the latest version of the Google Home app reportedly does contain some references to several image files pertaining to a product whose codename starts with the letter “b.” While those images appear to be nothing but black pixels, similar ones ending with the letter “j” show a product that’s believed to be the Google Home Mini, or “joplin.” This state of affairs may indicate that the Google Home Max might not hit the market until after its smaller counterpart does in the second half of October seeing how the Google Home app now appears to already be capable of connecting to the Google Home Mini and features relevant assets.

Apart from at least one new Google Assistant-enabled smart speaker, Google’s Wednesday event should also be used as a platform for the launch of several new devices from the Mountain View, California-based tech giant. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL Android flagships are expected to be the main focus of the happening but Google is also said to be preparing an announcement of a new first-party Chromebook in the form of the Pixelbook and possibly some other offerings. All products that the company debuts tomorrow should be available for purchase by this year’s holiday season.
