Walmart on Tuesday prematurely listed the Google Home Mini on its website but amended the situation in a relatively swift manner and has already pulled the early listing. The retailer still revealed many details related to Google’s upcoming smart speaker, including its $49 price tag and a release date scheduled for October 19th. Walmart’s posting also suggested that the Internet of Things gadget will be available in two variants called Chalk and Charcoal, the latter of which can be seen in the gallery below. The Google Home Mini is supposed to be 4.53 x 4.53 x 4.72 inches in size and tip the scales at under a pound.
The Google Home Mini also appears to be wrapped in some kind of a fabric, not unlike the newly announced Echo speaker from Amazon. Still, given its price tag and overall design, it seems that Google’s upcoming offering was designed to directly take on the Echo Dot instead of Amazon’s cylindrical speakers. Walmart’s listing also indicated that the upcoming device will primarily differentiate itself from the regular Google Home in terms of its form factor and should be functionally identical to its larger counterpart otherwise. No specific details related to its speaker(s) have been given, though the sound quality provided by the Google Home Mini will presumably be at least slightly inferior to the experience offered by the more expensive speaker.
The Mountain View, California-based tech giant is also rumored to be working on a larger revision of the Google Home internally referred to as the Google Home Max, recent reports suggested, though it’s currently unclear how close that particular product is to being commercialized, provided that it exists. As for the Google Home Mini, the small speaker should be officially announced tomorrow when Alphabet’s subsidiary is set to hold its latest hardware event and unveil a wide variety of new offerings, including the Pixel 2 smartphone series and a Chrome OS-powered Pixelbook. While the Google Home Mini is likely to be available in other markets outside of the U.S. such as Canada, it remains to be seen whether its release date coincides with the stateside one that Walmart just accidentally revealed.
