Samsung HMD Odyssey Mixed Reality VR Headset Is Now Official

Samsung and Microsoft have teamed up in order to release a new VR headset, the Samsung HMD Odyssey. The two companies have been rumored to release a new headset for quite some time now, and it’s finally here. Samsung actually claims that this is “the most immersive Windows Mixed Reality (MR) headset in the market”. Samsung and Microsoft have unveiled this VR headset during an event in San Francisco, and this VR headset will have some serious competition out in the market, as some other companies have already released their very own mixed-reality headsets, like Dell, Lenovo, HP, and so on.

The Samsung HMD Odyssey comes with full support for Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Platform, and its design is nothing out of the ordinary, but it looks nice, industrial even. This VR headset sports two 3.5-inch AMOLED displays, these two displays are identical, they both sport a resolution of 1600 x 1400 at 90/60Hz. Samsung says that these two displays will provide you with a 110-degree field of view, which should make the provided content look extremely immersive. With this VR headset, you’ll also get a USB 3.0 Interface Bound Cable which is 4 meters long, and an HMDI 2.0 port is also available on the headset. Now, as far as IPD is concerned, we’re looking at a 60-72mm range here, and the headset comes with a Six Degrees of Freedom (6 DOF) sensor. Needless to say this VR headset is packed with all sorts of sensors, it includes an accelerometer (6 axis), gyrometer (6 axis), compass (3 axis), proximity sensor, and an IPD sensor which we’ve already mentioned above. There are two microphones included here, Cortana is a part of the package, and the Samsung HMD Odyssey VR headset also comes with a built-in AKG headphone control & function, says Samsung. This VR headset also comes with the Samsung HMD Odyssey controller, which sports a touchpad (which is clickable), menu button, Windows / controller power button, trigger, thumbstick and an indication light. This controller weighs 160 grams, in case you were wondering.

This virtual reality headset measures 202 x 131.5 x 111mm, while it weighs 645 grams. The Samsung HMD Odyssey VR headset will go on sale in November, and it will be priced at $499, though do keep in mind its pricing will vary from market to market, of course, the aforementioned price is applicable to the US.
