Google has explained in detail a new process it recently implemented to predict the battery life of Pixel phones with the use of deep learning technology. A product manager in the New York City-based office of Google shared the explanation via the Pixel product forum page, providing some glimpse into how the newly rolled out changes help to improve the accuracy of battery life prediction on the Pixel devices.
According to the product manager, the search giant has developed a new model native to the Pixel phones that works to analyze how your phone’s battery operate on the same days and times by looking at the way you use your phone within a given period. Given that information, the built-in model then personalizes the prediction for how long your phone battery can last any further based on your phone habit over time. That means Google has brought into play a deep learning application to help predict battery life more accurately. Last month, Google introduced a battery management application called Device Health Services to the Google Play Store. The app is designed to help you gain insights into how much more time is probably left for your phone’s battery to continue running based on your usage. It also displays information about your specific phone usage habit and how each application on your phone affects its battery life. Additionally, the mobile solution lets you adjust toggles for battery saver mode and auto-brightness as well as display the battery percentage in the notification bar.
Prior to these changes, your mobile device would only use a plain assumption to estimate your battery life without taking into account your different phone usage habits. For example, Google says it will assume you will continue to use 10 percent of battery per hour if you have been using that same battery usage rate over the previous hours, though the internet giant admits this process has not been always accurate. The battery life estimates can be viewed by going to the Settings page of your phone and clicking on the Battery section, under which your personalized battery life prediction is visible. Just like the previous prediction, these estimates display both the percent level of your phone battery and how long you can continue using your handset. You can also view the estimate on a graphical representation by tapping on the Battery icon and clicking on the big battery icon. As always, Google vows to keep on improving these predictions to improve your battery experience on Pixel devices.
