Ard Boudeling, Meizu’s Head of Global Marketing, had released some really interesting news on his Twitter page a couple of days ago. Mr. Boudeling announced that Meizu is working with MediaTek ‘to create the best facial recognition technology on smartphones’. In addition to that, Mr. Boudeling also said that the two companies are hoping that the technology will be ready for use next year, and that they’ll be able to show it at some point in 2018.
That is pretty much all the info that Mr. Boudeling released, but it sure sounds interesting. Does this mean that Meizu will remove the fingerprint scanner from its devices, like Apple did with the iPhone X? Or will the company offer both options, maybe? Well, it remains to be seen, but it seems like Meizu is working on all sorts of things to show us next year. The company’s exec already confirmed that the company will release a ‘bezel-less’ smartphone next year, and we’ve already seen plenty of rumors and leaks regarding that phone, though chances are none of those leaks were accurate. Meizu’s exec did not say when exactly should we expect such a smartphone to become a reality, so we’ll just have to wait and see what will happen, but it is possible that Meizu will release it in the first half of next year.
Meizu had announced a while back that it plans to continue cooperating with the largest mobile SoC manufacturers, Meizu even listed Qualcomm, Samsung and MediaTek, which means that we’ll see quite a few new phones from the company next year, while we’ll also get some variety in the process, quite probably. Meizu actually signed a global licensing agreement with Qualcomm at the end of last year, after Qualcomm sued MediaTek a couple of times for alleged patent infringement. The two companies put all that behind them, and are now cooperating on new smartphones, while Meizu has been cooperating with both Samsung and MediaTek for quite some time now. The Meizu PRO 7 Plus is the company’s current flagship, and that device is fueled by the Helio X30 SoC, and it sports a secondary display on the back. Meizu probably will not release any more high-end devices this year, but we do expect them to release several such phones next year.
