Nokia 5 Receives Android Oreo Beta, Coming Soon To Nokia 6

The Nokia 5 is now making the jump to the beta stages of Android 8.0 Oreo, according to a recent tweet from HMD Global CPO Juho Sarvikas, and what’s more is that the Nokia 6 has also been confirmed to enter the Oreo beta labs soon. Nokia 5 owners who may want to participate in the beta program can do so by visiting Nokia’s official website, creating an account and entering the smartphone’s IMEI number. As a point of reference, the beta software is identified as version 5.140, though this may change soon with incremental beta updates throughout the testing period.

According to the changelog, Android 8.0 Oreo beta for the Nokia 5 introduces Notification dots, the new Picture-in-Picture mode, and support for password autofill. Additionally, the update should provide faster boot up times, it includes the Google Security Patch for the month of December and introduces Google Play Protect security scans. Members of Nokia’s beta labs will receive the latest update over the air, and as usual regarding these types of procedures, it’s highly advised to download and apply the software while the smartphone has at least fifty percent battery charge left in order to avoid unwanted system shutdowns. Also, beta releases are distributed only over active Wi-Fi networks so make sure the Nokia 5 is connected to one before checking for new updates.

HMD Global previously confirmed that the Nokia 3, 5, and Nokia 6 will all receive Android Oreo by the end of 2017. The Nokia 5 seems to be the first from the trio to receive this treatment, and according to CPO Juho Sarvikas, the Nokia 6 should follow soon though no timeframes were given. The Nokia 3 remained unmentioned in the recent tweet so it remains to be seen when, or if it will join the beta labs before the end of the year. Also worth noting is that the Nokia 8 is already one big step ahead of its siblings as the device made the jump to the public Android 8.0 Oreo build in late November, following roughly one month of beta testing. Having said that, if all goes well then the Nokia 5 might also receive the final Android Oreo build within a month’s time.
