Xiaomi Mi MAX 2 Gets MIUI 9 & Nov. 2017 Android Security Patch

Xiaomi is currently distributing the latest version of MIUI 9 to the Mi MAX 2. On its official forums, the smartphone manufacturer detailed the software improvements that are incorporated into the upgrade. According to the company’s changelog, there were optimizations made to the software’s notification shade, allowing it to better accommodate messaging applications Line and Whatsapp, while the GMS module of the device’s operating system has also been updated. In addition, the software package will install the November 2017 Android security patch, which should resolve several vulnerabilities found in the kernel component and the media framework of Google’s operating system. The patch also fixes the KRACK security exploit, a vulnerability discovered in the WPA2 protocol that permits a hacker to intercept data transmitted between a smartphone and a Wi-Fi router.

The smartphone manufacturer noted that eligible handsets should automatically receive the software package  over the air in most cases. Another option is for people to proceed to the Updater app in order to manually trigger the installation process. However, for users whose smartphones are still running older versions of Xiaomi’s proprietary ROM, they will need to manually flash the software upgrade onto their phablet. Before installing the software package, it is important for people to back up all the files and images stored on the handset to a personal computer or a microSD card in order to prevent possible loss of important data. Moreover, users should ensure that the battery of the device has sufficient charge to last the entire installation procedure and they should also verify there is enough free space in the internal flash storage in order to temporarily keep the software package.

The Xiaomi Mi MAX 2 was unveiled in May, powered by the Snapdragon 625 chipset from Qualcomm. This SoC is comprised of an octa-core CPU running at a maximum clock speed of 2.0GHz and the Adreno 506 GPU. The handset contains 4GB of RAM and is available in variants that include either 64GB or 128GB of storage space expandable via a microSD card by up to 256GB. The device sports a 6.44-inch display with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels and has a 5,300mAh battery which isn’t removable.
