Xiaomi has just announced two new Redmi-branded smartphones in China, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus. These two smartphones have been leaking out for quite some time now, and we pretty much knew what to expect. It turns out that the rumors and leaks were more or less accurate, these two phones are made out of metal, and they’re actually basically identical in terms of the design, though the Redmi 5 Plus is a noticeably larger smartphone. Having said that, let’s see what these two handsets have to offer, shall we.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus sport considerably thinner bezels than its predecessors, both devices come with a rear-facing fingerprint scanner, and a single main camera. Both devices also sport a rounded display, which is also a first for the company’s Redmi series of smartphones. All the physical keys are placed on the right-hand side of the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus, while the SIM card tray lies on the left. Having said that, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are budget phones, and they differ in terms of specs, despite the fact they sport the same design. Let’s start with what specs these two smartphones share, both devices ship with Android 7.1.2 Nougat, with Xiaomi’s MIUI 9 OS on top of it, while both come with a dual SIM setup as well. You will find the same 12-megapixel shooter (1.25um pixel size) on the back of both of these phones, and the same can be said for a 5-megapixel front-facing snapper. Bluetooth 4.2 is also included in both of these phones, and so is an IR blaster which you’ll spot at the very top of both of these phones.
Now, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 features a 5.7-inch HD+ (1440 x 720) display with a 2.5D curved glass on top of it. The phone is fueled by the Snapdragon 450 64-bit octa-core SoC, and it sports 2GB / 3GB of RAM and 16GB / 32GB of expandable storage. A 3,300mAh non-removable battery comes with this smartphone as well, while the phone measures 151.8 x 72.8 x 7.7mm, and weighs 157 grams. The Redmi 5 Plus, on the other hand, sports a 5.99-inch fullHD+ (2160 x 1080) display with a 2.5D curved glass on top of it, while the phone also comes with 3GB / 4GB of RAM and 32GB / 64GB of expandable storage. This smartphone packs in a 4,000mAh non-removable battery, while the phone measures 158.5 x 75.45 x 8.05mm, and weighs 179.5 grams. The two Redmi 5 variants are priced at 799 Yuan ($121) and 899 Yuan ($136), respectively, while the two Redmi 5 Plus models cost 999 Yuan ($151) and 1,299 Yuan ($196) in China, respectively. Both phones come in Black, Light Blue, Gold and Rose Gold color variants, and will become available for purchase in China starting on December 12.
