During CES 2018 this week LG has been showcasing its lineup of new TV technologies for this year, which include the new OLED G8 TV with built-in ThinQ AI technology, and LG’s new models of the Nano Cell display TV which is part of LG’s Super UHD lineup, something the company revealed for its TV tech back in 2017. LG officially unveiled its new TV tech for this year back on January 2nd, detailing that its new TVs would be coming with a new processor inside to power all the functionality, called Alpha, which is designed to offer a range of improvements over the older processor used in previous TVs.
One of the bigger improvements with this chip is the AI-related capabilities. With the Alpha chip inside LG is taking more of an approach to integrating artificial intelligence into its TVs, allowing users to do things like initiate voice commands for more basic purposes such as searching for content on the TV itself as well managing playback of content. These TVs will also be compatible with both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa so the capabilities of what can be done with either of these new TV lineups is fairly extensive. While LG’s own ThinQ AI technology will be able to handle more basic functions, Google Assistant and Alexa can help expand the functions by letting users control different smart home products, or even ask a simple question or place an order for something through Amazon.
In addition to support for Google Assistant and Alexa, as well as coming with LG’s own ThinQ AI technology inside both of these TVs also boast support for Dolby Atmos audio technology which should mean an improved sound experience for the user. This is in comparison to the previously-used Harman Kardon audio technology that was seen on past TVs from LG in these lineups. Both TVs will come in a range of different sizes to cater to most tiers of the market in regards to consumers, starting with a pretty standard 55-inch size for example, and going up to 75-inches for those that want something a little bit bigger and won’t mind spending the money to get it.
Each of these TVs is incredibly thin visibly, which should make them appear a little more stylish as these days the thinner the TVs tend to be the sleeker their looks are perceived to be, and LG has delivered with some pretty thin units this year. The new OLED G8 in particular is extremely thin, as shown in some of the images in the gallery below. Though still running on WebOS, having Google Assistant and Alexa integration makes these TVs more versatile than ever, and keeps LG competitive in the TV market where many of the top brands are announcing similar products which either integrate Google Assistant, Alexa, or both. With LG’s offerings coming with both, it definitely has the potential to make these stand out more for consumers when they go to look at upgrading to a new TV. Right now LG doesn’t have a launch time frame set it looks like, and there’s still no word on what these TVs will cost, but they probably won’t be inexpensive.
