LG Electronics on Tuesday unveiled a new series of smart television sets equipped with its Nano Cell displays which are meant to succeed its high-end LED offerings announced exactly a year ago. The South Korean tech giant revised its display technology to allow for even more accurate color rendering that tolerates wider viewing angles, hence being suitable for larger audiences. The new TVs span three series, with the flagship lineup being the SK800 one that includes three 4K models, ranging from 55 to 75 inches. A local dimming solution enabled by the company’s backlighting technology is an exclusive of its ultra-premium series, whereas the SK9500 and SK8500 models utilize full-array dimming. The lineups include 55 and 65-inch devices but other than being of the 1080p variety, they remain largely identical to the SK800 family.
Besides the Nano Cell displays, LG’s latest smart TV offerings are similar to the company’s 2018 OLED models which were also announced earlier today; all of them are powered by a new system-on-chip called α (Alpha) and boast Dolby Atmos support which replaced Harman Kardon’s audio platform integrated into the 2017 devices, presumably because the U.S. company was recently acquired by LG’s rival Samsung. The firm’s webOS is still part of the package here but is more versatile than ever, having been confirmed as the first smart TV platform after Android TV to receive support for the Google Assistant. The integration itself revolves around LG’s Magic Remote which still accompanies all of its new TVs, allowing users to interact with the Google Assistant by simply holding its microphone icon and speaking any command or query. The straightforward manner in which the AI service was incorporated into LG’s TVs also allows you to summon the Google Assistant without relying on the “Ok Google” trigger phrase. As expected, all of the latest models support Dolby Vision-enabled HDR.
The Seoul-based consumer electronics manufacturer will be showcasing its new TVs at the next iteration of CES which is scheduled to start next Tuesday, January 9th. All three lineups should be released on a global level in the coming months and feature price tags comparable to the ones of their predecessors, though no pricing details have yet been provided by LG.
