ASUS has announced that release of a new Wi-Fi router feature, dubbed as AiMesh. This feature connects multiple ASUS routers in an effort to increase the coverage of the Wi-Fi network. One of AiMesh’s key advantages is its compatibility with older ASUS routers, which means that there is no need for people to buy a whole new set of hardware in order to take advantage of the new functionality. The Taiwanese firm further highlights that its software feature allows people to choose among the different models of ASUS routers that they actually prefer, in contrast to mesh network systems which are only commonly available in fixed bundles. Since there is no need to replace the routers that are currently in use, there is no need to replace their preferred configurations.
ASUS also claims that the AiMesh Wi-Fi system offers better Wi-Fi speeds compared to other mesh system offerings. According to the company, the AiMesh system can offer maximum data speeds of 5.3Gbps, as opposed to rival systems that mostly achieve maximum speeds of up to 3Gbps. In real life scenarios, ASUS’s dual-band AiMesh Wi-Fi can achieve data speeds of 928Mbps, which is four times faster than a competing tri-band tri-hub mesh Wi-Fi solution and five times faster than a dual-band tri-hub Wi-Fi systems. In order to achieve the increased data speeds, the AiMesh software automatically chooses the best backbone for its network, whether it is an ethernet connection, 2.4GHz, or 5GHz Wi-Fi and in a scenario wherein one of the routers in the network fails, the software should automatically switch to other remaining connections.
In order to set up an AiMesh Wi-Fi network, users should upgrade the firmware of their ASUS routers to the latest version available, which can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. People should then choose the primary router and set the other routers to factory default settings. ASUS recommends that the primary router should have better specifications compared to the extending routers. People should connect the primary router to the internet and then create the Wi-Fi network. The extending routers should then be turned on and they could be connected to the primary router through the ASUS Router app. The software also allows people to set either a single SSID for the entire network or separate network names for different Wi-Fi frequencies.
