A drone manufacturer, DJI, has announced the DJI Mavic Air drone at an event in New York City. According to DJI, the Mavic Air is 41 percent lighter than the Mavic Pro while when folded, the Mavic Air has a smaller footprint compared to the DJI Spark. Despite having a smaller footprint than the DJI Spark, the Mavic Air is equipped with a 1/2.3-inch sensor with an aperture size of f/2.8 and a wide angle lens. The camera sensor is capable of recording 4K videos with a frame rate of up to 30fps and capturing still images with a resolution of 12-megapixels. According to DJI, the Mavic Air takes advantage of improved HDR algorithms that are capable of automatically choosing the appropriate exposure settings and processing the overexposed and dark areas in an image. In addition, the drone can capture sphere panoramas with a resolution of up to 32 megapixels. The sphere panoramas are formed by stitching together 25 separate photographs. The drone also includes a 3-axis mechanical gimbal, which stabilizes the drone’s camera resulting in steadier shoots.
The DJI Mavic Air includes at least four shooting modes, which are the ActiveTrack, QuickShots, SmartCapture, and TapFly modes. In the ActiveTrack mode, users can choose up to 16 subjects that the drone will track, and this feature works even if the subjects run, jump, or cycle. The QuickShots option, on the hand, allows the owner of the drone to compose shots by simply choosing one of the six available QuickShots. SmartCapture enables users to control the drone and capture images using hand gestures while the TapFly feature permits people to control the drone using the smartphone screen. Meanwhile, the images and videos captured by the Mavic Air can be shared immediately to social media using the DJI GO 4 app, which could be downloaded from the Google Play Store.
The DJI Mavic Air offers a maximum flight time of 21 minutes, and it can reach a maximum flight speed of 68.4 kilometers per hour. The manufacturer mentioned that due to a new Wi-Fi transmission system, the Mavic Air is capable of sending a live 720p video feed to the controller from a distance of up to four kilometers. The drone also supports the FlightAutonomy 2.0 feature, a functionality that allows the drone to evade obstacles. Interested consumers may purchase the device from the website of DJI and it comes with a price tag of $799.
