A Huawei-made device believed to be the Mediapad M5 has passed through the certification process of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This could mean that the device will be released in the United States in the near future. The specific model that was certified by the regulator has the model number SHT-W09. The certification documents include a diagram of the tablet, as well as a list of connectivity features. The diagram of the device’s back panel shows that the tablet will have a single rear camera, while its right side is meant to accommodate a volume rocker and a power button. The device, according to the certification documents, is capable of connecting to Wi-Fi networks running on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies, and will also support Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy. The tablet also has GPS and GLONASS connectivity, according to the same source.
The certification documents further state that the Huawei Mediapad M5 will ship with a 4,980mAh battery but in contrast with earlier reports, it seems that the tablet does not include a 3.5mm headphone jack. Instead, the device will only have a single USB Type-C port located at its bottom, though it is likely that the manufacturer will bundle it with a USB Type-C to 3.5mm port adapter.
The Huawei Mediapad M5 will serve as the successor to the Mediapad M3, which was launched in October 2016. Like other Chinese device makers, Huawei likely decided to skip the number four since this number is considered unlucky in the company’s home country. The upcoming device is expected to sport a premium aluminum build and stereo speakers like its predecessor did. A previous report claims that the Mediapad M5 will be powered by the Kirin 960 chipset, which is comprised of an octa-core 64-bit CPU and the Mali-G71 MP8 GPU. The device will also include 4GB of RAM, according to older rumors. A recently emerged Bluetooth certificate suggested that the tablet will sport an 8.4-inch display with a resolution of 2,560 by 1,600 pixels. The Mediapad M5 is rumored to ship with Android 8.0 Oreo pre-installed, although the company’s proprietary skin, EMUI 8.0, is expected to run on top of Google’s operating system.
