UMIDIGI recently announced its first smartphone of 2018, the UMIDIGI S2 Lite. While this is a phone that is designed to be affordable and accessible to most, it is also one which packs in a number of features not often encountered on devices priced as low as this one. The most noteworthy of which is the inclusion of 3D facial recognition. After initially announcing the phone and confirming the Face ID feature, UMIDIGI has now released a new video showcasing how the feature works, and what potential buyers can expect from the technology.
The video looks to highlight, that like the phone in general, the speed of the facial recognition feature is fast, while also being accurate. In addition to also being a safer version of the software with the video demonstrating how the software cannot be fooled or spoofed simply by using a photo of the person – something which has hit the headlines a few times of late due to this being an issue with some of the more high-profiles examples of smartphone facial recognition. The reason for why this added layer of protection and security works is the use of 3D profiles. Where the software makes a note of various additional depths and distances between facial aspects when first scanning the face, as well as when making comparisons during the authentication process. In addition the video also highlights how this version of Face ID is just as capable when the lighting conditions are less than ideal – like for example at night or in a darkened room.
As for the UMIDIGI S2 Lite in general, this is a phone featuring a 6-inch display along with a 1440 x 720 (HD) resolution. Inside, the S2 Lite comes loaded with 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, a MediaTek MT6750T octa-core processor, a 5,100 mAh battery, and Android 7.0 (Nougat). Cameras come in the form of a dual rear camera setup (comprised of a 16-megapixel primary camera and a 5-megapixel secondary camera), along with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.
