Chinese phone maker OPPO officially launched the OPPO A83 in India, having confirmed the Android mid-ranger will start retailing in the country on Saturday, January 20th, priced at Rs. 13,990 or approximately $218. The handset debuted in the South Asian country less than a month after being introduced in China and while some recently spotted certificates suggest the company is also preparing a variant with 4GB of RAM, the one unveiled in India still features 3GB.
Other specifications of the device have also remained unchanged; unlike most contemporary smartphones released by OPPO, the OPPO A83 isn’t a particularly selfie-focused offering and is instead positioned as an all-rounder meant to provide a consistent user experience and versatile features on a budget. The handset boasts a 5.7-inch IPS display panel with an HD resolution of 1,440 by 720 pixels amounting to an elongated 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio. Its screen is surrounded by relatively minimal bezels that don’t leave enough room for a physical Home button which could double as a fingerprint reader and the OPPO A83 doesn’t have such a sensor on its back, either. The smartphone is powered by MediaTek’s Helio P23 (MT6763T) chip, an octa-core silicon clocked at a maximum operating frequency of 2.5GHz. Besides 3GB of RAM, it comes with 32GB of internal flash memory expandable via a microSD card slot and sports dual-SIM capabilities, as well as support for 4G VoLTE and Bluetooth 4.1.
The rear plate of the OPPO A83 accommodates a 13-megapixel camera accompanied by a standard LED flash, with its slim top bezel featuring an 8-megapixel sensor. Android 7.1 Nougat is also part of the package, enhanced with OPPO’s proprietary ColorOS 3.2. An update to Android 8.0 Oreo is likely to be distributed to the device by mid-2018 but isn’t expected to come with support for Google’s Project Treble. The OPO A83 is 150.5 x 73.1 x 7.7mm in size and weighs 141g, thus being a relatively compact offering despite a screen that puts it in the phablet category. OPPO is expected to continue placing a large focus on India going forward as the world’s second largest contemporary handset market keeps growing at a rapid pace due to a combination of first-time smartphone owners and consumers who still aren’t exhibiting any signs of upgrade fatigue.
