Pisofttech has launched a panoramic VR camera that is capable of stitching together 8K videos right on the device, in what it’s claiming is the world’s first product that has the ability to do so. The camera is called the Pilot Era and will be on display at CES this week, and more than being the world’s first VR camera that has the ability to stitch 8K videos on the camera itself without the need to hook the device up to a PC and use a separate software program to get the job done, the Pilot Era is capable of doing the stitching in real-time for 4K and 6K.

The new Pilot Era camera is being described by Pisofttech as a completely self-contained unit as it will not only stitch video right on the camera, but once the stitching is complete it will also let the user post the videos to social media so they can share the end result with others. Images can be stitched together too so even if the user is mostly snapping photos and not recording the camera will still be able to take care of everything for them. The camera will also support Facebook Live and YouTube Live’s 4K streaming limits.

Although the camera is capable of shooting in 8K, it will only shoot in 8K at 30 frames per second. The good thing here for users is that the shooting resolution can be scaled down to offer better frame rate performance such as 100 frames per second if the shooting resolution is scaled down to 4K from 8K. In addition to 4K and 8K video and image capture and stitching, the Pilot Era has other notable features, like Ambisonic audio recording, exposure and color adjustments that can be made in real-time, algorithms that stabilize photos and videos internally, and a battery life of 180 minutes. The camera even comes with two batteries so you have a spare, allowing you to swap out the dead battery for a charged one when or if the need arises. Pisofttech is expecting to launch the Pilot Era in April of this year with an estimated price of around $3,000 USD, so while the device will be capable of a good many things and offer some quality video and photo features, it won’t be the cheapest option.
