RED has released an update on its official forums regarding its upcoming smartphone offering, the HYDROGEN One. In its announcement, the tech firm detailed four key features of the HYDROGEN One, one of which is its holographic display. When in 2D mode, the smartphone’s 5.7-inch display should act like a normal smartphone would, according to the device maker. However, the screen is capable of showing “better than 3D” images when it is in in 4-view (4V) mode. The 4V content can be viewed without using a 3D glass, although the tech firm notes that the brightness of the screen is reduced when it is in 4V mode. In addition, the company claims that the HYDROGEN One is capable of delivering multichannel spatial sound, whether through connected headphones or the handset’s internal stereo loudspeakers. The HYDROGEN One sports a modular design and it includes POGO pins at the back of the handset that can transfer power and data between the handset and stackable modules. Last but not the least, the tech company claims that the device’s industrial design allows users to grip the smartphone easily.
The company also detailed in its announcement the specifications of the HYDROGEN One. The handset will be powered by a Snapdragon 835 chipset from Qualcomm and it will contain a 4,500mAh battery to keep the lights on. The device will include a headphone jack, a USB Type-C port, and a dual SIM card slot. Customers may also capture 4V content using the handset without the need for any additional modules, and the company mentioned that a 2D companion image will come with every 4V file.
According to RED, the HYDROGEN One has received “unprecedented support” from carriers although the tech firm mentioned that it cannot provide any more details at this point. Unfortunately, it may take some time before the carriers start shipping the handset, primarily due to the certification process of the network operators. Nonetheless, the tech firm mentioned that the carriers will likely start shipping the device by summer of 2018, while the unlocked version of the smartphone will likely ship earlier. RED is also claiming that it already has a working prototype that it is already showing to content creators, and it may hold a “HYDROGEN Day” in April where it will showcase the device to content developers and customers who pre-ordered the handset.
