Earlier today, Samsung has shared its Q4 2017 financial info, and along with that, according to ZDNet, the company has announced that its foldable smartphone will be announced in 2018, even though Samsung’s statement probably got misinterpreted here, which we’ll talk about in a second. In any case, the Galaxy X, which will be the name of the company’s upcoming foldable smartphone, or at least that’s what it was called in all the rumors and leaks, will become official later this year, or will it. According to a report by ZDNet, this Korea-based tech giant said that its foldable OLED smartphone will launch this year. After that statement, ZDNet actually quotes Samsung by saying “In 2018, we will differentiate through development of cutting-edge products such as foldable OLED smartphones,” which more or less confirms that the foldable device is on the way, though the company did not specifically mention that it will launch in 2018, rather that it is committed to development of foldable smartphones in 2018. If you take into account that DJ Koh, Head of Samsung Mobile, basically said that the company’s foldable phone will not arrive until 2019, well, chances are that it won’t arrive this year, but who knows. The Galaxy X rumors and leaks have been circulating the Internet for a long time now, and a number of Samsung’s patents pointed to the fact that the phone will get released at some point. Samsung’s statement does confirm that foldable phones are on the way, but it does not definitely say that one of them will launch before the end of this year, though it’s definitely a possibility.
Samsung had already scheduled a press conference for February 26, when the company plans to introduce its Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus handsets that have been leaking for a long time now. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus will be quite similar to its predecessors when it comes to the design, though it seems like their top and bottom bezels will not be proportional any longer, as the lower bezel will be thinner than the top one. Both devices will be made out of metal and glass, they will ship with a curved OLED display, and chances are we’ll get Snapdragon 845 and Exynos 9810 SoC variants of both phones. In any case, the announcement will not happen for another three weeks or so, but more rumors and leaks will certainly pop up in the meantime.
