Earlier this month, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro actually received one of our yearly awards, as the phone offers stellar battery life. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is making its way to more and more markets by the day, while the US market is next in line, though you won’t be able to grab it through a carrier it seems. In any case, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro does offer great battery life, which we’ve already talked about in our full review of this handset which was published back in November, but considering that part of the reason why it offers such great battery life lies within Huawei’s very own Emotion UI (EMUI) skin, it’s worth taking another look at it, just in case you’re thinking of getting the Mate 10 Pro sometime soon, read on.
The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is the company’s flagship, as most of you know, and this handset comes with a 4,000mAh Li-Po battery which is not removable. That being said, the Mate 10 Pro, unlike the Mate 10, does not sport a QHD display, the Mate 10 Pro comes with a fullHD+ (2160 x 1080) AMOLED panel, so that’s something that’s worth taking into account as well, not only does the phone ships with an OLED panel, but its display resolution also helps keep your phone alive throughout the day, no matter how hard you’re pushing it. In order to achieve such compelling battery life, Huawei utilized some of Android 8.0 Oreo’s features (which is a software version that comes pre-installed on the device), while it also added some of its own optimizations and features through Emotion UI (EMUI) 8.0.
Now, we tested the Mate 10 Pro’s battery during the review process, and at the end of the day, were still had between 45 and 60 percent of battery left. Usage patterns differ from one person to the other, but things will become far clearer if we mentioned that our SoT (Screen-on-Time) at the end of the day was at 6 hours, or close to it, and if you take into consideration that we’re looking at 15 hours of use here, it paints a really nice picture for the Mate 10 Pro and its battery life. Most smartphones cannot reach 6 hours of screen-on-time during the day, at all, while the Mate 10 Pro, at least in our testing, not only managed to survive, but it had plenty of power left, just in case you need it.
Things aren’t exactly perfect, though, as we did experience some power management issues out of the box. Emotion UI kept on limiting apps in the background, so we ended up missing e-mails, and all sorts of other notifications. Good news is, you can disable all those limitations in the settings, and believe it or not, your battery life will not deteriorate because of it, at least it hasn’t in our testing, as we were getting really similar results, so there’s really no point in limiting a ton of apps which need to push notifications your way, but it’s worth noting that you’ll probably have to mess around with settings and turn those limitations off, though that’s probably dependant on the version of the phone you get as well.
All in all, other than some settings you may need to tweak, only once, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro offers a really great experience when it comes to battery life, especially considering that this is a flagship smartphone which comes with top of the line specs, and we’re pretty sure that its Kirin 970 64-bit octa-core SoC, which is Huawei’s very own processor, also plays an important part in all this. Huawei talked a lot about the Kirin 970’s AI capabilities, which are supposed to even improve the Mate 10 Pro over time, but it remains to be seen if that will happen or not.
