Counterpoint: Huawei Shipped Most Phones In China Last Year

Counterpoint Research, a well-known market research company, has just released its report for the state of the Chinese smartphone market in 2017. The company actually ranked smartphone manufacturers in China last year, while it also compared results from 2017 to a year before that. In the report, the company also ranked individual smartphones, so if you’re interested in finding out what were the most popular smartphones in China last year, read on.

Now, the first graph that you will spot down below represents Q4 results in China. Huawei took the first place in Q4 alone, as the company managed to grab 19 percent of the market, based on its shipments, compared to 17 percent that it had last year at the same time. OPPO is second-placed with 17 percent, compared to 18 percent last year, while Vivo is close third with 15 percent, the same percentage it had last year at the same time. Apple and Xiaomi follow the leading three OEMs, as the two companies managed to grab 15 and 14 percent, respectively. The second graph in the gallery down below shows market share for the whole 2017, not just one of its quarters. Based on this graph, Huawei was once again the number one smartphone OEM in China, as it managed to grab 19 percent of the market, compared to 16 percent it held back in 2016. OPPO is second-placed with 18 percent, while Vivo grabbed the third place with 17 percent of the market. Xiaomi is actually the fourth-placed company in 2017, with 12 percent of the market, while Apple is fifth with 11 percent.

Now, if we take a look at the best selling handsets in the country last year (third graph down below), you will notice that the OPPO R9S is actually first on that list (3 percent), which may surprise some of you, but OPPO’s handsets are extremely popular in China. The iPhone 7 Plus is second-placed, as 2.8 percent of people got this handset. The Vivo X9 is third with 2.7 percent, while another OPPO-branded phone sits in fourth place, the OPPO A57. The iPhone 7 is fifth, and it is followed by the OPPO R11, Vivo Y66, Honor 8 Lite, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X and the Honor Enjoy 6X. That is your list of top 10 best-selling handsets in China in 2017, according to Counterpoint Research. It is also worth noting that sales volume grew by 5 percent, while smartphone shipments dropped by 1 percent compared to last year.
