A pair of photo samples said to have been taken with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 appeared online on Tuesday, having been shared by one industry insider from China. The shots that can be seen above suggest Samsung’s upcoming Android flagship will be capable of capturing a wider dynamic range while eliminating much more image artifacts in the process of doing so, consequently preserving more details and delivering more accurate colors. In the newly leaked example, the Galaxy S8 struggled to capture a shot of buildings in bright daylight from a much darkly lit room, consequently overblowing its subjects, messing up the white balance, and being unable to capture a significant level of details.
While the shooting conditions have been less than ideal for a mobile camera, the image that’s said to have been captured with Samsung’s upcoming Android handset is of a much higher quality, featuring nearly perfect exposure, accurate colors, and many details in the subjects themselves. Both images are understood to have been zoomed to a degree, though the source didn’t clarify whether the one on the right has been taken with the Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9 Plus. Unlike the Galaxy S8 lineup, members of the upcoming Android-powered family will differ in much more aspects than just their screen real estate, with the 6.2-inch Galaxy S9 Plus being expected to debut with a dual-camera setup consisting of two 12-megapixel sensors, one of which is mounted behind a lens with a variable aperture ranging from f/2.4 to f/1.5, an industry record that has so far been solely held by Samsung’s W2018 flip phone released late last year.
The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus have already been confirmed for an official announcement on February 25 set to take place in the run-up to this year’s iteration of the Mobile World Congress. Following their reveal at the Barcelona, Spain-based trade show, the Android flagship duo should become available for purchase in mid-March after a relatively short pre-order period. Recent reports suggested Samsung is planning to increase the prices of its upcoming handsets compared to those attached to their predecessors, with the smaller Galaxy S9 now being expected to start at approximately $750, depending on the market.
