Meizu vice president Li Nan has confirmed that the Meizu X2 is real and will arrive later this year, packing high-end specs and a relatively affordable price tag. The smartphone has been expected for quite some time now, but so far it was unclear whether it would actually make it to the market this year. The Meizu X launched back in November 2016, sporting a premium design and respectable specifications for its price range. Meizu was then expected to launch a successor in the following year, but 2017 came and went without such a device being commercialized. Putting rumors to rest, the Meizu VP has now confirmed that the company had to delay the launch of the Meizu X2, but the smartphone is nonetheless coming this year.
The executive had previously noted that the Meizu X2 would not be a mid-ranger like some reports claimed, having now revealed that the handset will pack flagship specifications such as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, which is also expected to power a number of other ultra-premium Android devices released this year, including the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the successor to the LG G6. When it comes to pricing, Li said that the upcoming Meizu X2 will cost approximately 2,999 yuan, which would translate to around $473 or €384 going by today’s currency exchange rates.
The company is also adopting a full-screen design for its smartphones. The Meizu M6S already has a largely bezel-free aesthetic and other upcoming smartphones such as the Meizu 15, Meizu 15 Lite, Meizu E3, and the Meizu Plus are expected to boast a similar look as well. Consequently, the Meizu X2 will also likely come with a full-screen design centered around a screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio. Based on some earlier leaks, the smartphone may also feature a round secondary display on its rear panel. Li made no mention of the device having a secondary screen or referenced a specific image format, nor did he say whether the Meizu X2 will come with a dual-camera setup or a more conventional system. No official release date is available at this point but more details on the matter should follow soon, presumably no later than spring.
