Motorola is introducing a handful of new Style Shell Moto Mods built from polycarbonate and Corning Gorilla Glass 5. As expected, these Mods take the form of swappable back covers and are compatible with the Moto Z smartphone series. A total of five different designs are now available for purchase from Motorola, with each model carrying a price tag of $29.99 – that is $10 more than the previous Style Shells featuring a nylon or wooden finish. The current range of models includes Retro Stripe, Overlapping Triangles, Graphic Flowers, Expressive Curves, and last but not least, Colored Leaves.
Unsurprisingly, each one of these new Style Shell Moto Mods features a completely different and unique design, and although they weigh nearly double as much as the nylon Style Shells clocking in at 53 grams (up from 25g) they retain the same relatively thin dimensions as the nylon models, adding only 2mm to a smartphone’s profile. It should be stressed that unlike other Moto Mods, the Style Shell attachments don’t add any new functionality to a smartphone, and instead, they are specifically designed to bring a new look to compatible Moto devices. Given the modular nature of the Moto Z series, these Mods attach to the back of a device through magnets and can be easily swapped out by the user at any time, whether to be replaced with a different design or a different type of Mod altogether. As a reminder, the list of Motorola smartphones that are compatible with Moto Mods includes the Moto Z, Z Play, Z Droid, Z2 Play, and the Moto Z2 Force Edition.
Meanwhile, recent leaks suggest that Motorola may be preparing the Moto Z3 series for release in the coming months, and all evidence so far indicates that these devices will retain their compatibility with existing Moto Mods, including the Style Shells at hand. This also suggests that the Moto Z3 lineup will have similar dimensions to the existing series’ and will also retain a circular main camera hump on the back panel. With Mobile World Congress set to open its doors near the end of the month, Motorola may introduce these devices soon.
