Some OnePlus smartphones running an Android 8.0 Oreo-based version of OxygenOS are affected by a bug that’s occasionally preventing them from ringing to denote an incoming call, according to dozens of complaints posted by the company’s customers on its official product forums. The issue doesn’t appear to be consistent and only manifests infrequently, with the only common denominator being that it exclusively appears on devices running one of the newer versions of OxygenOS. The original complaint said the bug was present on the OnePlus 5T powered by the OxygenOS version 5.0.3 but multiple owners of the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 3 later confirmed they’re experiencing similar problems. The Chinese phone maker has yet to officially acknowledge the problem but is expected to do so shortly and will presumably fix it with a future software update. In the meantime, most affected users are reporting that rebooting their phones temporarily fixes the issue.
The cause of the bug remains unclear, though it doesn’t appear to be widespread; software problems affecting a major portion of OnePlus’s customers are usually quick to gain traction on the company’s forums and attract hundreds of responses in a matter of hours. One user claims clearing the cache from the Recovery mode of any affected device can serve as a permanent fix but no further reports have validated that theory. Anyone who’s been missing phone calls on their OnePlus device in recent times that wants to test the proposed fix can do so by booting the device by simultaneously holding its power button and volume up key, which will launch the Recovery mode. Some less frequent issues OnePlus users have been reporting post-Oreo include unreliable Bluetooth connectivity and occasionally missing notification sounds.
The company’s core development team was on holiday at this point last year due to the Chinese New Year, consequently pausing open beta releases for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T for a month, but no such announcements have been made this year and the firm will presumably continue issuing software updates for its devices on a monthly basis. OnePlus has an extremely successful year behind it, having managed to grow across most relevant metrics, including its turnover which reached $1.4 billion in 2017. The phone maker’s next Android-powered offering is expected to be announced this spring in the form of the OnePlus 6.
