The Official BBC Earth Quiz is the name of the latest Android app from the British media powerhouse that became available for download from the Google Play Store earlier this month. The app was developed by Kalypso Media, a Worms, Germany-based studio best known for its work on the popular real-time strategy franchise Tropico. Much like its name suggests, the app is based on BBC Earth’s programming such as Planet Earth, Planet Earth II, and the new Blue Planet II, boasting more than 4,000 clips and questions from the TV shows. Fans of the programming and newcomers to the franchise will hence be able to use the app to test their knowledge of natural history, with BBC claiming the creation has been designed for all ages so as to be maximally accessible.
The product boasts much higher production values than the average mobile quiz one can download from the Google Play Store, featuring high-resolution art and music responsible for delivering an immersive experience regardless of the part of the world your in-game character is visiting. Players are placed in the role of a photographer who’s tasked with answering questions about eight different locales from various continents, with the environments spanning everything from deep oceans and massive deserts to tropical jungles and temperate steppes. The core gameplay revolves around beating the AI to answering questions, with every correct answer being rewarded with lengthy excerpts from BBC’s authentic archive of natural history that can later be revisited. If a question is giving your trouble, you can use a 50/50 bonus to eliminate two out of four possible answers, with the game also featuring a tournament-like multiplayer mode.
BCC and Kalypso are monetizing the quiz through advertising and in-app purchases that can speed up your progress by allowing you to not be hindered by the game’s energy system. Besides being meant to generate additional revenue for BBC, the mobile game should also promote its programming, with the Blue Planet II now being set to launch in the United States in the coming weeks after becoming the most watched TV show in the United Kingdom over the entirety of 2017.
