The Galaxy S9 lineup and other Samsung-made products received over 30 awards at the latest iteration of Mobile World Congress, the company revealed Friday. This year’s edition of the Barcelona, Spain-based trade show officially closed its doors yesterday, with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus arguably being the biggest stars of the show. According to most predictions, the pair of flagships is likely to outsell all of its Android rivals released over the course of this year, with Samsung itself also expecting it to outperform the Galaxy S8 lineup. The two 2017 devices are believed to have sold approximately 37 million units around the world in their eleven months of commercial availability, as per many industry trackers.
Besides the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus which were honored by numerous media outlets including Android Headlines, a number of Samsung’s other solutions also received accolades at the mobile industry’s largest annual trade show. Samsung Pay and the new DeX Pad were among such technologies, as was the 2017 Gear VR with Controller which has yet to receive a follow-up. The Seoul-based original equipment manufacturer also arrived at MWC 2018 to showcase a number of its 5G technologies over the course of this week, reiterating its commitment to the telecom segment. Samsung is set to provide Verizon with equipment meant to enable a 5G fixed wireless access solution in the second half of the year, with the mobile service provider presently targeting a handful of testbeds throughout the United States. Sprint’s next-generation wireless network will also utilize Samsung’s infrastructure, the Overland Park-based company confirmed earlier this week.
With Samsung chief Jay Y. Lee recently being released from prison, the company is expected to pursue mergers, acquisitions, and investments in a much more aggressive manner going forward. Mr. Lee spent almost a year in detention after being arrested and sentenced for bribing top government officials in exchange for political favors. The grandson of Samsung founder Lee Byung-chul was released from the Seoul Detention Center last month, having had his five-year prison sentence suspended. Besides consumer electronics and wireless technologies, Samsung is presently committing significant resources to machine learning and general artificial intelligence applications, as well as the Internet of Things segment.
