Lenovo Group VP Chang Cheng recently took to Chinese social network Weibo to tease an upcoming smartphone which will be officially unveiled on March 20. The original post on Weibo was submitted by Mr. Chang from an unannounced smartphone called the Lenovo S5, and this quickly led to speculation that the upcoming model will bear the same moniker. Furthermore, this isn’t the first time the VP used the so-called Lenovo S5 to publish content on Weibo, and near the end of February when Mobile World Congress was underway, the VP hinted that at least one upcoming Lenovo handset could make use of ZUK’s proprietary Android-based OS – ZUI.
The latest teaser pertaining to the March 20 unveiling was also accompanied by a couple of hardware details, and according to the original post, the upcoming device may be powered by a generous 6,000mAh battery. In addition, the VP hints that despite the large battery capacity, the smartphone will be thin and resilient, and finally, the teaser suggests that the handset will boast AI capabilities at the hardware level. No details regarding the software were revealed, but given that the first time the ‘Lenovo S5’ moniker emerged was back in February when Chang Chen mentioned the adoption of ZUK’s ZUI by Lenovo handsets, there is a possibility that the Lenovo S5 could make use of that particular OS.
Back in January, Mr. Chang shared an image which depicted the bottom half of a back panel belonging to an unannounced smartphone bearing the Lenovo branding. This particular image was photographed and shared using the ZUK Z2 Pro, and a few Chinese media outlets now speculate that this partially revealed handset may have actually been the Lenovo S5. The device appeared to feature a metal frame segmented by two antenna stripes located on its bottom, along with a highly reflective, almost mirror-like finish covering its back panel, which could hint at the adoption of a glass sandwich design.
