Vivo has shown off the Vivo Apex in China, following the phone’s initial appearance at MWC 2018. This is not exactly an official announcement of the phone, as the company failed to share its full specs, but Vivo did show off the phone to Chinese media outlets, and the company also shared some additional info about the Vivo Apex. This is a ‘concept’ handset, at least Vivo calls it that, and it is rather innovative. The Vivo Apex managed to attract a lot of attention at MWC 2018, and many people wondered whether the phone will become available at all. Well, thanks to the info that Vivo shared, we now know that the Vivo Apex is coming, but you’ll have to wait quite a bit if you’d like to purchase it.
Vivo has announced that the phone will go into mass production by mid-2018, and in addition to that, the company said that the device is fueled by the Snapdragon 845, which is something that we did not know thus far. In addition to that, Vivo also announced that the Vivo Apex features a 5.99-inch OLED display with COF technology, while both ambient and proximity sensors are included below the display. Now, as some of you know by now, the Vivo Apex features an in-display fingerprint scanner, and once you pick up the phone or power the display on in any other way, you will be required to place your finger on a particular part of the display in order to unlock it. Even though Vivo included an in-display fingerprint scanner in one spot below the display, the company utilized something called ‘Half-Screen Fingerprint Scanning Technology’, in order to give you a larger area for finger-scanning, as approximately one-third of the phone’s display is able to scan your fingerprint.
The Vivo Apex is almost entirely bezel-less, its top and side bezels are 1.8mm thick, while its bottom bezel is 4.3mm thick. The phone features a 98-percent screen-to-body ratio, while the phone also includes a pop-up selfie camera. After you fire up the camera app on the device, and switch camera view from rear-facing to front-facing one, a camera will pop-up from the phone’s body. Vivo says that it takes that camera 0.8 seconds in order to be ready for shooting, in case you were wondering. The Vivo Apex also offer Hi-Fi audio, it features a so-called System in Package (SIP) technology, three amplifiers, and a rather capable DAC. The phone’s camera supports Super HDR that has a limited dynamic range of up to 14 EV. The phone’s OLED panel actually serves as an earpiece, as a regular earpiece is not a part of this phone’s design.
Vivo did not share any RAM or storage info when it comes to this phone, nor did the company reveal exact rear and front-facing camera info. We also do not know how much will the Vivo Apex cost, but more info will probably leak in the coming months, while you can expect this smartphone to become available for purchase, at least in China, in the second half of the year.
