Sprint is incentivizing consumers to purchase the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus by promising to attach a piece of an actual galaxy to every new Samsung flagship it sells going forward, at least until supplies last. While the universe has no shortage of stars, the International Star Registry only agreed to support Sprint’s initiative with a finite number of stars buyers of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus will be able to name once they verify their new purchase. The stars that are being given out form what the telecom giant named the Sprint Constellation which appropriately takes the shape of its logo. The actual number of stars that Sprint’s customers can redeem hasn’t been disclosed.
Besides naming a star, owners of Samsung’s latest ultra-premium offerings will also be granted the ownership of their astronomical object, immortalized with a 12 x 16-inch International Star Registry certificate, whereas their moniker of choice will permanently make its way to the Volume 11 of the Your Place in the Cosmos book penned by one James Edmund Magee. A sky chart of the same dimensions showing the coordinates of your star is also part of the promotional package, as is an astronomy booklet that will teach you more about the universe and help you locate your new astronomical property, the Glenview, Illinois-based organization said. Buying and naming stars has been a service offered by the company since 1979 and remains a highly popular gift in the United States. The terms and conditions of the promotion don’t compel you to register a star in your own name, meaning you can also use the offer to get a free unique gift for a loved one, so long as they’re located in the U.S.
The certificate itself doesn’t actually grant you real property rights and isn’t intended for scientific use, with its primary purpose being entertainment, though the name of the object will still be permanently recorded in astronomy history books. The offer is going live simultaneously with the release of the Galaxy S9 lineup tomorrow and will last until every star in the Sprint Constellation has been named, the company said. Following the registration that can be completed by referring to the banner below, the International Star Registry will send you your certificate and other promised materials via USPS Priority mail, meaning you should expect to receive it in up to a week regardless of where you’re located. Sprint’s initiative is the second Galaxy S9-related PR stunt performed by a national carrier today, with T-Mobile detailing its bizarre world records meant to promote Samsung‘s latest Android flagships on its network just several hours back.
