T-Mobile broke two Guinness World Records with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus as part of its publicity stunt meant to draw attention to the wireless carrier’s release of Samsung’s latest Android flagships which is scheduled for tomorrow. The historic happening took place on Lake Elsinore in California where T-Mobile went out to test the Galaxy S9 lineup, having involved waterskiers and a branded airship in the process of doing so. The world records broken by T-Mobile as part of the event are that for the fastest text message sent on a touchscreen-equipped smartphone while water-skiing and the greatest distance water-skied while being towed by a blimp. The mobile service provider has yet to disclose the actual record-breaking figures but already associated the stunt with its own network that it still claims is the fastest in the country, as well as the Galaxy S9 series itself which consists of Samsung’s “fastest” smartphones to date.
T-Mobile’s latest initiative comes shortly after the company unboxed the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus on the “moon” and is in line with the wireless carrier’s previous promotional activities meant to advertise Samsung-made offerings on its network. The Bellevue, Washington-based firm already started shipping some Galaxy S9 pre-orders to customers earlier this week, as did its rivals and Samsung itself. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus are arguably two of the most important Android flagships of the year, at least in the context of expectations surrounding their commercial performance, with the duo being projected to outsell all of its Android-powered rivals released over the course of 2018.
Unlike last year when the Galaxy S8 family debuted a major redesign of Samsung’s ultra-premium mobile devices, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus are more of an evolutionary refinement of the Infinity Display-centered aesthetic, though they still come with new high-end chips and significantly improved cameras. The models sold by T-Mobile are of the single-SIM variety and feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845, as well as 64GB of internal flash memory expandable via a microSD card by at least 400GB, though they’re also understood to support up to 2TB of extra storage, i.e. they will once larger microSD cards make their way to the market.
